Swimming like a real mermaid: for many children, it’s a dream they would love to make come true right away. A mermaid tail for children provides hours of fun in the pool, on vacation, or simply in the backyard with the garden hose. But before you buy a mermaid tail for your child, it’s good to know a few things about safety, size, and material.
Why children love mermaid tails
The popularity of mermaid tails for children has been growing for years. Films, series, and social media have made “being a mermaid for a while” a top wish for many children. It’s not just about dressing up: swimming with a monofin also challenges children to use their leg muscles in a new way and improve their swimming skills.
Looking for a gift idea? A complete mermaid bundle with a tail and monofin is the easiest choice for many parents for a birthday or Sinterklaas: everything is already coordinated and ready for swimming. View the full range in our mermaid bundles.

Choosing the right size and ensuring safety
From what age can my child use a mermaid tail?
Our children’s models are suitable from approximately 4 years old, provided the child can swim independently without aids (life jacket, floaties) in the water where it will be used. A monofin requires a different movement than regular swimming: the legs move together as one, which requires strength and coordination. Therefore, always let your child swim under supervision while wearing the tail, even if they can swim well.
Which size is suitable for which age?
A tail that is too large will be loose and provide less control; a tail that is too small will pinch and simply won’t be comfortable to swim in. Because children grow quickly, we recommend determining the size based on their current height and hip measurement, not just their age. Our mermaid tail size chart helps you find the right size in just a few steps.
Mermaid tail materials
Child-friendly materials
Children swim enthusiastically and often intensely, so the material needs to withstand this. Choose a strong, stretchy swimwear fabric that moves well with the body and can take a bit of wear without the tail quickly tearing or fading due to chlorine and sunlight. At Mermaid Sisters, we believe it’s important for children to be able to move freely in their tail, so swimming remains comfortable and the tail doesn’t pinch or chafe.
A cheap tail may look just as appealing in the store, but in practice it often starts tearing or stretching at the seams after only a few swims. Therefore, look for sturdy stitching, a double layer of fabric around the monofin connection, and a good fit. That way, the tail will still look beautiful and remain intact after a summer full of swimming fun.
For boys too
A mermaid tail is certainly no longer just for girls. More and more boys are enthusiastically joining in, often with a slightly tougher color scheme such as black, dark blue, or a bright orange/red shade. Looking for a mermaid tail for boys? Swimming lessons and the first time with a monofin
The first time swimming with a monofin feels different from what many children expect. First, let your child calmly get used to it in shallow water: with both feet together in the monofin, teach them to “dolphin swim” using a wave-like movement from the stomach down to the feet instead of kicking their legs separately. It’s best to practice this near the edge or in the shallow end at first.
At first, many children find it more exciting than expected that their legs cannot move independently. Give them time to adjust and don’t turn it into a competition—having fun and building confidence in the water are more important than quickly learning to swim well with the tail.

Frequently asked questions from parents
Is a monofin dangerous for my child?
Not if your child can already swim independently and swims in the tail under supervision. The monofin restricts leg movement, so always stay nearby and avoid very deep or crowded water the first few times.
Which size should I choose if my child is growing quickly?
Measure your child’s height and hip measurement shortly before purchasing and use our size chart. If in doubt between two sizes, choose the slightly roomier option for longer-lasting comfort.
Can my child take the mermaid tail to swimming lessons?
Yes, provided the swimming instructor is aware of it. Many swimming schools now also offer special mermaid swimming lessons.
Are there also mermaid tails for boys?
Certainly. In addition to the classic colorful designs, we also have tougher, darker color schemes that are popular with boys.
How do I wash my child’s mermaid tail?
Rinse the tail with tap water after every use, wash it at a maximum of 30 degrees, and let it air-dry without using a dryer or exposing it to bright sunlight.
